How to Root OnePlus 5 and Flash TWRP Custom Recovery

Known as the smartphone killer, the OnePlus smartphone gained popularity so quickly because of its feature packed combination of hardware and software at an affordable price. The latest in the series is the OnePlus 5, released in June, 2017 and it rocked the smartphone market like the earlier ones. The smartphone come packed with a 5.5-inch Full HD display with Gorilla Glass 5 protection, a 16 MP + 20 MP rear camera and 16 MP front camera, available with two different internal storage options and RAM options (64 GB and 128 GB storage with 6 GB and 8 GB RAM respectively), on top of that the device is packed with Snapdragon 835 chipset which is more power efficient and provide smooth multi-tasking. The OnePlus 5 come with the latest Android 7.1.1 Nougat with the custom OnePlus Oxygen OS layer on top. In this article, we’ll guide you about the whole procedure of unlocking the bootloader first and then flashing/installing the TWRP custom recovery and after the rooting your device using the custom recovery. The method is really simple, just follow the guide step-by-step without missing any part. Please read all the important cautions and warnings before beginning the process.

Warning

  • Unlocking the Bootloader will wipe all the internal storage and will reset your device. We recommend you to create an backup of all your important data and files.
  • This method is only for OnePlus 5, don’t try it on any other smartphone.
  • Rooting, Unlocking and Flashing can soft brick your device. We’re not responsible for anything in any case. Please understand what you are doing before you choose to proceed further.

Before You Begin

  • You’ll need an Windows based Computer system or Laptop.
  • Download and setup the ADB and Fastboot files in your PC/Laptop.
  • Enable USB Debugging and OEM Unlock option in your device. Go to Settings> About Phone> Software info, then find Build number and tap on it repeatedly until you see a message that says “You are now a developer.” Now go back to main Settings, and you will now see Developer mode towards the bottom. Tap on Developer mode and find OEM Unlock and USB Debugging. Enable them both.
  • Make sure your device is fully charged.
  • Download and Install the OnePlus 5 USB Drivers in your PC/Laptop.

How To Unlock Bootloader On OnePlus 5

  • Please make sure to follow all the step written above step by step and don’t skip anything.
  • Now go to this ADB & Fastboot installation folder, press and hold the SHIFT key and press the right mouse click on an empty space and the select the “Open command window here” from the options shown in the right-click menu.
  • Now a command window will appear on your screen.
  • Connect your OnePlus 5 to PC using the USB cable (Make sure the USB drivers are installed and USB Debugging is enabled).
  • Now, In the Command Window type the following command to boot your device into the Fastboot mode.

    adb reboot bootloader

  • Once your device boot into the Fastboot mode, type the following command and hit enter. 

    fastboot oem unlock

  • Once the unlocking process is done, type the following command to reboot your device to normal.

    fastboot reboot

    That’s it!! Your Bootloader is successfully unlocked on your OnePlus 5 with the easiest method available.

     

How To Flash/Install TWRP Recovery On OnePlus 5

Download the TWRP Recovery

  • Download the TWRP Recovery image and rename it to “recovery.img” and transfer it to the ADB & Fastboot folder which you setup earlier.
  • Go to the ADB & Fastboot installation folder, press and hold the SHIFT key and press the right mouse click on an empty space and the select the “Open command window here” from the options shown in the right-click menu (Make sure the “recovery.img” file is also in the same folder).
  • Now a command window will appear on your screen.
  • Connect your OnePlus 5 to PC using the USB cable (Make sure the USB drivers are installed and USB Debugging is enabled).
  • Now, In the Command Window type the following command to boot your device into the Fastboot mode.

    adb reboot bootloader

  • Once your device is Fastboot mode, type the following command and hit Enter to flash/install TWRP recovery in OnePlus 5.

    fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

  • The whole process will take few seconds to complete. Once done, type the following command to reboot your device to normal.

    fastboot reboot

  • That’s it!! Custom TWRP Recovery is successfully installed/flashed in your OnePlus 5.

TWRP Custom Recovery is installed/flashed successfully in your OnePlus 5. Now it’s time to gain root access in your OnePlus 5.

How To Root OnePlus 5

  • Download SuperSU zip file and transfer it in internal storage of your OnePlus 5.
  • Reboot your device in TWRP Recovery mode.
  • Now tap on the Install and select the SuperSU zip file which you transferred in your device earlier.
  • After selecting the zip file, Swipe to confirm the flashing process and the process will start.
  • Once the flashing process is done, you’ll get Reboot to System option, select it.
  • After your device restart, open the Google Play Store and search SuperUser app and install it to control all the rooting access.

That’s it!! Your OnePlus 5 is successfully rooted now.
